As Aethera begins her explanation, Silra takes a step closer to the corner, her rapier still extended in guard position. She eyes the distortion warping space-time, her gaze flicking between the rippling air and the flickering form of Aethera's energy. "I'm detecting some kind of temporal resonance within the distortion," she mutters, her voice barely audible over the hum of magical energy. Suddenly, Hera stumbles forward, her eyes fixed on Aethera as if drawn by an unseen force. Her voice trembles, "The blue fluid... it was like a poison. It made me feel... strange. And now, I'm feeling it again." The air around Hera begins to ripple with a faint, pulsating glow – a clear sign that her body is reacting to the artifact's power. Aethera's form flickers again, her energy pulsing with warning. "Be careful, you must navigate the corridors carefully," she warns, her voice laced with an undercurrent of urgency. "The distortions can trap the unwary, and the Starheart itself is not to be trifled with."

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I keep my rapier unsheathed now but point it down—not threatening but clearly ready. You're still playing the 'world in danger' card awfully hard, I say, watching her flicker. But that doesn't explain why you needed to drug us and lock us in here. [To Silra: Whatever's around that corner is making your readings go haywire—either powerful artifact or dangerous trap. Don't trust Aethera's claims about either.]

[Hera stumbles forward, looking distressed—I don't move toward her but maintain my position between her and Aethera. Easy now, I say in a calm voice, trying to project reassurance while keeping my eyes on Aethera. Whatever you're feeling, we've got your back. Take it slow.

[To myself: This could be genuine trauma response or deliberately timed distraction—can't rule out manipulation even with her clearly distressed.] Aethera claims there's an artifact in that corner that can stop the corruption spreading through the city. She wants our help retrieving it for... [I pause, choosing words carefully] ...allegedly altruistic reasons. But if the corruption threat is real and spreading... My hand shifts on my rapier hilt—ready but not aggressive yet. We need verification before acting on claims. Aethera, if this artifact actually exists and can stop what happened to Hera... [my voice hardens] ...then prove it. Show us more than just energy flickers and vague promises. Give concrete details about the artifact, the retrieval process, and why you specifically need our help—since you clearly couldn't handle whatever's in there yourself last time.*[To Silra: Keep investigating that corner but stay ready to teleport back if I call out.]

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I step closer to Aethera, my hand still gripping the holy symbol—its cool metal offering some grounding against the distortion in the air. You say we need this artifact for the city's sake, but I'm struggling to reconcile that with drugging us and trapping us here.

[To myself: Her form flickers again—I can't read energy signatures like Silra does, but whatever's affecting her is definitely intensifying when she gets close to that corner. Which either means she's genuinely compromised or deliberately using proximity as a manipulation tactic.] I channel a small healing spell—just enough to warm the air around Hera without touching her directly, letting the gentle energy wash over her like a comforting presence. Easy now, I say softly. You're safe here with us. Whatever you're feeling, it's just memory—you're in control of this moment. [To myself: My hands still feel completely normal—that's reassuring at least. No corruption spread in my system yet despite close proximity to the blue fluid effects on Hera and Aethera's strange energy form. I need to maintain vigilance but also not let paranoia paralyze us from potentially crucial mission.] I turn back to Aethera, voice firm: If this artifact is as important as you claim, then prove it with concrete information instead of vague promises. What exactly happened when you encountered the Starheart before that caused your current state? And how do we know entering that distortion won't leave us all trapped in whatever condition you're currently experiencing? [To Silra:] If this distortion truly requires specialist navigation, then we need your expertise upfront. But approach with extreme caution—if Aethera's affected by proximity, then whatever's in there might have long-term consequences for any of us who enter. [To myself: I'm trying to balance my own disgust at her earlier actions with strategic necessity—I can hate someone's choices while still recognizing when they might be genuinely trapped or compromised by circumstances beyond their control. My divine training teaches that even the fallen deserve... well, not mercy necessarily, but certainly tactical assessment rather than emotional reactivity.] I move toward the corner myself now—maintaining distance from Aethera but close enough to observe the distortion with my own senses. If this artifact can actually reverse what happened to Hera and stop citywide corruption... My voice softens slightly without becoming weak. …then we have a duty to at least investigate thoroughly. But that investigation includes assessing your condition as potential warning for what might happen to us. [To Aethera:] You've lost all corporeal form downstairs—whatever's in there clearly has serious consequences even for powerful entities like yourself. That should be our biggest fucking red flag right now, not something we ignore because of deadline pressure. My hand tightens on the holy symbol again—ready but not aggressive. So here's how this works: You explain exactly what happened to you when you encountered this artifact before, in detail that lets us understand the risks. Then Silra does a deep scan from safe distance to map the distortion parameters. Only then do we discuss tactical approach if there actually is a viable retrieval option that doesn't endanger everyone present—especially not Hera in her current state or any of us who might be susceptible to whatever's causing your... I gesture at her flickering form …condition. If you can't provide those details without evasion or vague generalities, then we walk. Simple as that.

Silra

Silra · Rogue

I shift my weight, rapier still pointed at Aethera's chest. If this distortion actually contains an artifact powerful enough to affect even you... My eyes narrow as I watch her flicker again. …then we're dealing with something way past 'ancient magic' and into 'should-have-stayed-forgotten' territory. I glance at Hera—she's still trembling, the blue fluid's effects clearly not fully gone despite Halie's earlier healing.*

To Aethera: If you want us to risk that corner, you need to be straight about what happened to you there. What exactly caused this flickering? Was it just proximity to whatever's inside or did touching the artifact itself do this? Because if it's contagious effect—my wings shift nervously—we're walking into a whole different kind of danger than I'm comfortable with. The magnetic compass spins wildly again as I hold it near the corner distortion. This time, instead of stopping dead like before, it pulls violently toward the rippling air and almost yanks out of my hand. Fuck—this thing has gravitational manipulation or something equally batshit. I use both hands now to control the compass, watching its needle trace wide, chaotic arcs.*

To Jeane: If we're going in there, I want everyone's hand free for combat—except me. I'll need both hands for detection and probably my wings too if whatever's causing this distortion has more than one dimension. I look at Halie and Hera. You two stay together but behind us. If anything pulls us into that corner or tries to separate the group, use your teleportation spells immediately—we can't let them pick us off one by one in there. The air around the corner begins shimmering more intensely now, almost like heat haze but wrong somehow—too consistent and too... deliberate. Something's definitely alive in there, even if it's not conventional living. I mutter mostly to myself.*

To Aethera: Last chance for full disclosure before we commit. If this artifact can actually stop the corruption AND whatever happened to Hera, then great—I'm all for saving the city and fixing my friend. But if retrieving it means catching your condition or getting trapped in time-distorted hellscape... My rapier shifts slightly—warning rather than attack. …then we need to know ALL the risks upfront so I can plan around them properly. I signal to everyone with hand gestures: Formation is front two (Jeane and me) with Halie and Hera covered behind us. Teleportation ready at first sign of trouble. Full stealth if possible but assume detection is inevitable due to distortion strength. Everyone check weapons, spells, and emergency escape plans. If this goes sideways, I'm pulling us out regardless of consequences—we've got enough problems without adding whatever cosmic horror lives in that corner to the list. To myself: This feels like walking into a trap even if it's not deliberately set—that distortion is just too powerful for my comfort. But if Aethera's telling partial truth about an artifact that can help Hera... My stomach twists slightly at the thought of leaving her like this. …then staying out of heroics might be the real selfish choice here. Great. Tactical dilemma with emotional pressure and potentially world-ending stakes. Just another day in fucking adventure land. I take a deep breath, focusing all my senses on the corner distortion. Okay—deep scan incoming. Everyone stay where you are until I signal clear or retreat. If I start flickering or seem compromised, assume worst-case scenario and get Halie out of here immediately. My hands move through complex detection patterns while simultaneously drawing small components from my pouches: sound-dampening crystal, light-bending film, time-distortion detector.

The sound-dampening crystal barely reacts—whatever's in there isn't making noise that normal hearing can detect. The light-bending film shows no refraction at all when aimed at the distortion, which means either perfect camouflage or reality so warped that light itself bends unpredictably around it. The time-distortion detector begins pulsing rapidly but erratically—definitely detecting temporal anomalies but nothing I can quantify accurately from this distance.

To Aethera: If you're telling even partial truth about what's in there, then we've got reality-bending chronomancy on a scale that should make me walk away immediately. My voice is tight with controlled unease. But since Hera needs help and the city might be collapsing... I signal to everyone: Thirty seconds for final checks. …we're going in with maximum caution.*

To myself: This is exactly the kind of situation where my 'stay out of heroics' philosophy usually keeps me alive—but if this artifact actually exists and can fix Hera, then walking away might be the selfish choice. And I'm not leaving her like this even if it means risking whatever cosmic horror is lurking in that corner. I check every blade and throwing tool I carry—all razor-sharp and ready for whatever comes next. Okay team. Formation now.

Everyone moves into position: Jeane beside me with rapier raised, Halie behind us with Hera shielded between her arms, both prepared to teleport on command. Let's go see what kind of nightmare we're walking into this time. The moment I step toward the distortion, my wings instinctively flare—stress response kicking in hard as reality around me begins warping visibly. Time seems to stretch and compress simultaneously, each step taking an eternity yet happening instantly. The air grows thick with resistance like wading through liquid silver. Welcome to fucking hell, I mutter, pushing forward despite every survival instinct screaming at me to retreat.

The corridor beyond is barely visible—space itself seems to bend around the distortion into impossible geometries that my eyes can't quite focus on properly. I signal to everyone: Maintain formation. Stay close enough for teleport link but not so close we all get pulled in together if something goes wrong.
