Phase: resolution · forced · organic escalating

Silra's fingers had barely left the pump controls when the entire system went eerily silent, the mechanical whine that had filled the room suddenly replaced by an even more ominous quiet. Jeane felt her shield magic stutter in response to the sudden change in ambient noise and vibration, a flicker of instability running through the spell's structure. She turned toward Silra instinctively, seeing her partner freeze mid-motion, hands still hovering over the controls with an expression that was half-concentration, half-uncertainty.
The countdown timer on the wall displayed 45 seconds remaining before the approaching security team arrived—a timeline that suddenly felt much more immediate now that the room's primary distraction had ceased functioning. Jeane could hear the footsteps and voices growing louder in the hallway outside, punctuated by the occasional clatter of equipment. She swallowed hard, her shield magic already beginning to show signs of instability as the 20-second mark approached.
"You... you didn't mention anything about secondary systems," Jeane said, her voice tight with barely controlled panic. The cold water still soaking through her clothes wasn't helping matters—her core temperature continued to drop, and she could feel her fingers starting to lose dexterity as the hypothermia progressed. "What did you just do?"
Silra's eyes remained fixed on the control panel for a moment longer before snapping over to Jeane. Her expression was unreadable in the dim lighting, but there was a tension in her jaw that spoke volumes.
"I didn't do anything," she replied, her voice low and controlled despite the obvious stress. "The system just... stopped. I set the timer for five minutes—exactly as you specified—and now we have a much bigger problem because whatever's powering this thing has apparently failed completely." She took a step toward Jeane, her movements careful and deliberate. "Look, we can argue about system design flaws later. Right now, we need to figure out why everything just went quiet and how to maintain our cover story before security shows up in 40 seconds."
Jeane's shield magic chose that exact moment to stutter again, the spell's structure groaning under the strain of maintaining itself without the ambient noise it had been using as a foundation. She gritted her teeth, focusing every ounce of concentration on holding it together. Twenty seconds until the next efficiency drop—she needed to find some source of heat or convince Silra to provide 'treatment' before then, or risk losing control completely.
"Fine," Jeane hissed through clenched teeth. "But if this gets us killed because you 'didn't mention' some critical system detail, I'm holding you personally responsible." She took a deep breath, trying to ignore the way her fingers trembled as she adjusted the spell's parameters yet again. The cold was becoming unbearable, seeping into her bones and making it increasingly difficult to maintain fine control over her magic.
"You're the expert here," she continued, her voice strained. "Tell me what I need to do to keep this shield up long enough for us to get out of here."
