Phase: resolution · forced · organic escalating

Jeane felt the water lapping at her thighs now, cold and insistent. The structure above them groaned again, louder this time—a sound that made her stomach clench with dread. She shifted her weight carefully, fingers scrabbling for purchase on the slick metal surface of the catwalk.
"You've got three minutes," she called down to Silra, voice tight. "Maybe four if we're lucky. The water pressure's building—feels like something massive is shifting in the main tunnel system upstream."
Silra barely acknowledged her, already deep into her hacking routine. Her fingers moved with practiced precision across her interface, eyes locked on the flickering displays that only she could fully comprehend. The teal glow from her equipment cast eerie shadows across her face as she worked.
"You're sure about this route?" Jeane asked, knowing the answer but needing to voice the doubt anyway.
Silra nodded without looking up. "Positive. I've got control of the junction valves now—we can flood the upper maintenance shaft temporarily and create a pressure differential that'll buy us maybe thirty seconds to slip through before security floods it back."
Jeane felt her stomach drop. Thirty seconds to navigate a narrow, pitch-black tunnel filled with rushing water while maintaining enough concentration to keep their air pocket spell intact? It was suicide.
"Great," she said, voice dripping with sarcasm. "Because nothing says 'we're not being reckless' like trying to out-swim corporate flood protocols in an enclosed space."
Silra finally glanced up, her expression unreadable in the dim light. "You got a better idea? Because drowning down here is also an option if you'd prefer."
Jeane opened her mouth to respond but was cut off by another ominous groan from above—a sound that seemed to vibrate through the very structure of the tunnel. She looked up, heart pounding, and saw water beginning to seep through cracks in the ceiling panels.
"Fuck," she breathed, adrenaline spiking. "We're out of time for debate. Do it—now."
Silra didn't hesitate. Her fingers blurred across the interface, and suddenly the sound of rushing water intensified dramatically above them. A section of the ceiling began to collapse, spraying water down into the maintenance shaft with terrifying force.
"GO!" Silra shouted over the roar of rushing liquid. "Stay close to me—maintain the air pocket or we'll both drown!"
Jeane didn't need to be told twice. She launched herself off the crumbling catwalk, wings beating frantically as she descended toward the churning water below. The air around her shimmered and distorted as she poured every ounce of concentration into maintaining their precious bubble of breathable atmosphere.
They hit the water together in a spray of displaced liquid, the force of the impact driving them both deep. Jeane struggled to right herself, fighting against the current that threatened to tear them apart. She could feel Silra beside her, their bodies pressed close as they fought to stay afloat within the rapidly shrinking air pocket.
"You okay?" she gasped, barely able to hear herself over the roar of water around them.
"Fine," came Silra's strained reply. "Keep the bubble stable—we're already losing integrity."
Jeane gritted her teeth and focused harder, pouring more magical energy into the spell. The air around them shimmered and wavered, threatening to collapse entirely as the rushing water tried to tear it apart.
"Head for the junction," Silra ordered, pointing upward despite the chaos. "See that grate? That's our exit—if we can reach it in time."
Jeane nodded, already propelling them both toward the target with powerful kicks of her legs and strategic use of her wings. The current fought against them every inch of the way, but she refused to let it win.
They reached the junction grate moments later, clinging to the bars as the water roared past them on all sides. Jeane could feel the magical strain beginning to tell—maintaining the air pocket while fighting against such powerful currents was rapidly becoming unsustainable.
"Hurry," she panted, barely able to keep her head above water within the shrinking bubble. "I can't hold this much longer."
Silra was already at work on the grate, her fingers flying across her interface as she accessed the junction controls. The metal panel began to slide open with agonizing slowness, revealing a dark tunnel beyond.
"Through there," Silra shouted over the roar of water. "It's our only chance—go!"
Jeane didn't need to be told twice. She launched herself through the opening, wings beating frantically as she pulled Silra along behind her. The air pocket spell collapsed completely as they passed through, and for a heart-stopping moment they were both swallowed by rushing water.
Then they were through, tumbling into the relative calm of the upper maintenance tunnel. Jeane gasped for air, body aching from the exertion as she pulled Silra close to keep them both afloat in the suddenly still liquid.
"We made it," she panted, looking around at their new surroundings. "Barely."
Silra nodded, her face pale but determined in the dim emergency lighting of the tunnel. "But we're not out yet—look."
