Phase: resolution · forced · organic escalating

The ancient subway station had become a death trap, the water rising fast and turning their escape route into a deadly maze. Jeane clung to the compromised catwalk above, her fingers growing numb from the cold as she stared down at Silra below. The elf woman was dry on the narrow walkway but surrounded by rising waters—already chin-height in the tunnel proper, and climbing fast. Silra's teal eyes remained fixed on her screens, fingers flying across holographic keys despite the growing panic around them. She'd managed to create a pocket of clean air using her technomancy, but every breath felt stolen now as the water rose past her knees, then her thighs. The entity's pressure was escalating—she could feel it in the way system defenses were responding, in the way her hacking tools strained against the corporate firewall.
"You're not seriously considering sacrificing them?" Jeane called down, voice tight with barely controlled panic. Her demonic nature didn't make her heartless, but cold logic worked better than human sentimentality when drowning was an option. "We don't even know if they're still alive down there." Silra's jaw clenched as she met the succubus's crimson gaze from above. She wasn't about to abandon people she'd led into this nightmare—especially not Halie, injured and defenseless—but every passing second made her options more limited. The water was already lapping at her collarbone now, threatening to short out half her equipment with every passing second.
"Fine," she said finally, voice sharp with barely contained respect. "We do this together—my emergency route is our only shot." Her fingers blurred across the final activation sequence, and a hidden panel slid open in the ceiling above Jeane's position. A narrow maintenance tunnel stretched upward into darkness—away from the rising floodwaters that now lapped at Silra's chin with every passing second. The air around them began to clear of noxious fumes as the emergency override protocol triggered, but the system's destabilization had consequences—the ground beneath them shuddered violently, and a loud groan echoed through the tunnel.
Jeane's eyes flashed crimson as she assessed the situation—her demonic instincts screaming at her to abandon the rogue and save herself through sheer magical force. But that would leave Silra trapped alone in rising waters, and even a creature of darkness like herself valued loyalty from those who proved useful. Her wings flared wide despite the confined space, catching what little air remained before water filled it completely: "New plan—we take your emergency route together." The arcane energy crackled around her fingertips as she prepared to boost them both through whatever lay ahead in that dark tunnel.
Silra didn't hesitate—she launched herself upward with a burst of enhanced strength, grabbing onto the edge of the maintenance panel and hauling herself up into darkness even as the water closed over her head. She could feel Jeane's powerful magic surge past her, creating a bubble of breathable air around them both as they plunged into the unknown tunnel above. The roar of rushing water below mixed with the creaking groan of failing infrastructure—somewhere between them and their abandoned companions.
"We're not leaving them," Silra gasped as she scrambled forward through the narrow passage, water streaming off her body. "We find a way to help from up here." Jeane's crimson eyes glinted in the darkness beside her: "Agreed. But first—we survive this fucking collapsing subway." The tunnel around them groaned ominously as if agreeing with that assessment.
