The water receded with a sickening gurgle, leaving them standing ankle-deep in murky liquid. The entity's sudden lunge sent a jolt through the group—its form twisted and wrong, moving with an unnatural fluidity that made Halie's stomach churn. She stepped forward instinctively, positioning herself between her companions and the monstrous thing now pressed against the tunnel wall.
"Enough," she said, her voice surprisingly steady despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins. "We're all in this together." The silver cross at her throat caught what little light remained, a small symbol of faith in a situation that felt increasingly unholy. She turned to face Jeane first, meeting the succubus woman's crimson eyes with a stern look meant to convey both warning and support.
"You want us to coordinate faster?" Halie asked, repeating Jeane's earlier frustration back at her. "Then stop threatening our only technical expert and actually let her work." She glanced sideways at Silra, who remained hunched over her interface despite the looming threat. The elf woman's fingers moved with a blur of practiced skill, lines of code scrolling past too fast for any but a trained eye.
Jeane opened her mouth as if to argue, but Halie held up a hand to cut her off. "I know you're frustrated—we all are—but Silra is our best hope out of this mess." She turned back to the entity, which seemed to pulse with malevolent energy even in its current position. The air around it shimmered with an otherworldly heat, and the stench of decay grew stronger.
"We need a plan," Halie continued, her voice dropping to a more private tone as she addressed Jeane directly. "One that doesn't involve you unleashing demonic powers in a confined space or picking fights with our allies." The cleric's blue-grey eyes locked onto the succubus's, and for a moment, the usual bravado seemed to falter.
"Thirty seconds," Halie hissed under her breath. "If Silra hasn't found us an exit by then, we'll discuss your... alternative solutions. But until then?" She gestured sharply at the floating screens. "Let her work."
